USB-C Hubs for Piano and iPad: MIDI, Headphones and Charging
Choose a USB-C hub for piano and iPad with the right ports for MIDI, wired headphones and charging. Three wiring plans and complete connection-kit budgets.

A piano cable takes the iPad’s only USB-C port. Add wired headphones and a charger, and the useful question becomes which sockets each connection will occupy. A small hub can handle this, provided its data ports, audio path and power supply match the equipment.
For MIDI, iPad-generated sound and charging together, look for separate power input and at least two usable data connections. One carries the piano; the other carries a headphone adapter or audio interface. A hub with built-in headphone audio can replace that second accessory.
These plans assume a USB-C iPad, an iPad-compatible USB MIDI piano and a working data cable. They do not apply to Lightning iPads. Hardware support is checked against manufacturer documentation dated 20 September 2026; the combinations below have not been bench-tested.
Start with where you want to hear the piano
If the cable types are still uncertain, identify them with our piano-to-iPad connection guide first. Here we are allocating the hub’s ports after that basic connection is understood.
MIDI carries performance instructions. It does not, by itself, put the digital piano’s own sound into the iPad. That distinction determines where the headphones belong.
1. Hear the piano through its own headphone socket
This is the simplest arrangement for an app that receives MIDI notes while you listen to the instrument. The hub needs a data port for the piano and a separate USB-C charging input. The headphones stay plugged into the piano.
You will not automatically hear the app’s backing track through those headphones. That requires a supported audio return to the piano, such as its USB audio input or a suitable analogue input. Check the piano’s manual before expecting a combined mix.
2. Hear an iPad piano app through wired headphones
The iPad now generates the sound. Use a hub’s supported headphone output, or connect a USB headphone adapter to a data port. The small converter inside that adapter turns digital audio into the analogue signal headphones need. A charging-only USB-C socket cannot do this job.
The following port map shows a hub with a separate USB-C data socket. Every line has a different destination; the two USB-C sockets are not interchangeable.

Apple confirms that USB-C iPads support hubs, MIDI devices and USB audio accessories. The app must also support the instrument and audio route. If you hear both the piano’s speakers and the app’s piano sound, lower the instrument’s speaker volume or use its documented Local Control setting. Avoid changing settings at random, because the next session may then start with a silent piano.
3. Use an audio interface you already own
Put the interface on a data port and connect the headphones to the interface. The piano’s USB MIDI cable can occupy another data port. An interface with a MIDI input can provide a different route for a piano with five-pin MIDI OUT.
Recording the piano’s own stereo sound adds its left/right audio outputs and two interface inputs, unless the piano supplies compatible USB audio. Our stereo interface guide covers that separate decision. There is no need to add a second headphone converter when the interface already supplies the output.
Check the interface maker’s iPadOS support and power instructions. A bus-powered interface may need its own approved supply or a different powered arrangement. Apple’s Logic Pro for iPad connection guidance recommends powered equipment for multiple devices and longer sessions; that is not a promise that every hub can power every interface.
Two hub choices with different limits
The Anker below provides more room for separate MIDI and audio accessories. Apple’s adapter is useful when one peripheral connection is enough. Neither has a built-in 3.5 mm headphone socket.

Anker 332, A8355: room for MIDI and a separate audio adapter
Its two USB-A data ports and separate USB-C data port fit the second wiring plan without using the charging inlet for an accessory. The USB-C headphone adapter occupies one port; the piano uses another. The maker’s US price is $24.99.
The important limit is accessory power: Anker specifies 4.5W shared across the two USB-A ports and 7.5W at the USB-C data port. A large charger does not turn either connection into an unlimited power supply. Check a bus-powered keyboard or interface against those limits.
Anker’s iPad charging note recommends a 45W wall charger. Its documentation does not establish a tested matrix of every iPad, piano and app, so confirm the exact iPad model with the maker if it is absent from the current compatibility information.
Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter: one peripheral, plus charging
Apple lists this adapter at $69 and explicitly lists compatible USB-C iPads. It supplies one USB-A peripheral connection, HDMI and a USB-C charging socket. That suits the first plan, where the piano handles the headphones, or a single compatible interface handling all the connections you need.
Once USB-A is occupied by the piano, there is no spare data socket for a USB headphone adapter. HDMI does not solve that problem for ordinary wired headphones. For simultaneous separate MIDI and USB audio devices, the extra ports on the Anker are more useful.
A built-in headphone jack is another valid design, but read its input/output description carefully. A headset microphone connection is not a pair of stereo line inputs for recording a piano. More sockets can also add unwanted audio destinations, particularly when a display is connected.
Budget for the charger and headphone conversion
The totals below are additional connection-kit costs, assuming you already own the iPad, a separately powered piano, its working USB-A-to-USB-B data cable and suitable wired headphones. They include a new charger and its cable. They do not include a new instrument, tablet, headphones or paid music app.
For the costed examples, these are the two accessories to check. Reuse an appropriate charger or headphone adapter you already own.

If your existing piano cable ends in USB-C rather than USB-A, the second plan needs a different port allocation: both that cable and the headphone adapter cannot occupy the Anker’s single USB-C data socket. Use a suitable USB-A data cable for the piano, or choose another supported audio arrangement. Add that cable’s actual price before treating the total as complete.
An interface setup has no universal total. Add the selected interface, its required supply and any missing data or audio cables to the hub budget. With an already-owned interface and all its required cables and power, the incremental Anker kit remains $50.98.
Check the headphones’ plug too. A 6.35 mm plug needs a suitable adapter for a 3.5 mm output; neither costed kit includes one. Headphone fit and cable reach matter at a keyboard, as covered in our digital-piano headphone guide.
Check the whole setup before the next lesson
Leave the hub supported on the desk or music stand, with slack in the host cable. A bundle of leads hanging from the iPad can pull at its socket or move the tablet when you reach for a control.
- Connect power first. Put the charger into the hub’s marked PD input, then connect the host cable to the iPad. Confirm the charging indicator. Anker’s power guidance reserves 15W for hub operation, so the wattage printed on a charger is not all available to the tablet.
- Add the piano by itself. Open the app’s MIDI input settings, where available, and confirm that several played notes register. If this fails, check the data cable and input selection before adding audio equipment.
- Add one audio destination. Start with the volume low. Play an iPad sound and verify which headphone socket carries it, then play the piano. This catches the common case where MIDI works but the headphones are listening to a different device.
- Run your normal workload. Use the app, screen brightness and accessories you intend to use in a lesson. Check for dropouts and a falling battery level. Disconnect unnecessary drives, displays and other accessories while diagnosing problems.
- Reconnect once. Unplug and reconnect the setup, reopen the app if necessary, and repeat the note and audio checks. Keep the working port arrangement together so it is easy to reproduce.
For a piano app that generates the sound, the useful finished setup is straightforward: notes arrive, the intended headphones play, and the battery keeps up for the length of your session.
