A digital piano can sound quite different when its speakers move from beneath the keys to a position in front of you. That makes placement part of the purchase. Before comparing wattage, check whether you have room for two speakers at roughly seated ear height, with a clear path to your listening position.
For a fixed home setup, start with a stereo pair. It preserves separate left and right channels from the piano. A single compact monitor suits a setup that moves between rooms or has space for only one cabinet, but one speaker gives up that left–right separation.
Essentials: an audio output on the piano, suitable analogue cables, powered speakers, safe supports and mains power. A computer, audio interface and subscription are unnecessary for this direct connection.
Make space for the listening position
For two speakers, begin with approximately equal distances from each speaker to your head and between the speakers. Aim them towards you, with the tweeters near ear height. This is the starting geometry in PreSonus’s monitor-placement guide; you can adjust it around the room and furniture rather than treating a measurement as a guarantee of good sound.
The plan below shows the relationship from above. Supports sit outside the playing area, so you can still see the score and move your arms.

Do not put a speaker where it can fall onto the keys or be pulled down by a cable. Keep ventilation clear and follow the model’s placement instructions. If the only available positions are on the floor beside your feet, budget for suitable supports before buying the pair.
Close walls and corners can change the bass balance. Try a few safe positions before reaching for EQ, especially if one speaker is in a corner and the other is in open space. For one monitor, aim its speaker towards the seated player and keep the controls reachable. You do not need a two-speaker triangle for a single cabinet.
Two practical options, with the cable bill included
The following choices cover a low-cost fixed stereo setup and a portable single cabinet. They are a connection-and-placement shortlist; the specifications do not establish how either will sound in your room.

PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen: a compact stereo pair
This is the lower-cost starting point for a permanent practice position. The pair has a shared front volume control, rear left/right audio inputs and a front headphone socket that mutes the speakers. One cabinet contains the amplification; the supplied speaker wire connects the second cabinet.
The limitation is bass extension. PreSonus lists an 80 Hz–20 kHz response, so the small cabinets should not be bought on a promise of reproducing the piano’s lowest fundamentals at full strength. Nor does an external pair automatically improve on a substantial cabinet piano’s built-in system. Listen to the registers you actually use.
Manufacturer price: $99.99 per pair. Each cabinet is approximately 14.1 × 16.4 × 21 cm (width × depth × height). The owner’s manual lists the power lead, inter-speaker wire, foam feet and two 3.5 mm audio leads in the box.
Roland CM-30: one cabinet with several inputs
A carry handle, front controls and multiple inputs make the CM-30 useful when the piano shares its speaker with other line-level sources or the cabinet moves between practice spaces. It is a 30-watt monitor with a 6.5-inch coaxial speaker system. It needs mains power.
A single CM-30 is mono at its speaker. Its stereo inputs do not make one cabinet a stereo pair. The Roland manual distinguishes stereo headphone listening and two-unit stereo linking from the internal speaker. At the checked Musician’s Friend price of $399.99, this is a convenience and input-mixing choice, not the cheaper route to home piano sound.
The required line-output cable
For the priced setup, both options use one Hosa CPR-202, 2 m: two ¼-inch TS plugs at the piano’s separate L/R line outputs, two RCA plugs at the speakers’ L/R input. Hosa’s checked price for this length is $13.95. It is two audio channels in one joined cable, not a lead that joins the outputs together.

The baseline reuses your piano, its supply, suitable existing supports and mains outlets; the cable run must fit within 2 m.

Recurring cost: no required software or subscription fee; electricity use is additional. Stands, longer leads or a headphone-jack adapter are separate costs if your room or piano requires them. Their price is not included here, so these totals are complete only for the stated line-output setup. A subwoofer is an optional later purchase, not part of either recommendation.
Match the piano’s output to the speaker’s input
Turn levels down and switch the equipment off before connecting. Read the labels on your actual piano: a headphone socket, line output, MIDI socket and USB port do different jobs. The piano-to-iPad connection guide explains the data side; the speakers here receive analogue audio.

Connect the active and passive cabinets with the supplied speaker wire, observing the marked polarity.

The cabinet combines those channels for its speaker. Use the piano’s output level and the CM-30 master control to set volume.
Stereo headphone output → stereo auxiliary inputUse a stereo lead of the correct plug size. The Eris has a 3.5 mm front input; CM-30 Aux In 2 is also 3.5 mm stereo. A piano with a 6.35 mm headphone socket needs the matching stereo cable or adapter.
The Eris manual identifies the active cabinet as the normal left speaker. Keep left and right consistent from the piano through the inputs and physical placement. For headphone-fed setups, start with a low piano level and raise it gradually; excessive output can overload the receiving input. Check your piano’s manual for whether inserting a headphone plug mutes its built-in speakers.
A single balanced ¼-inch input is not the same connection as a stereo headphone input. Do not assume that a cable is suitable just because the plug fits. Likewise, do not join two piano outputs with a simple Y adapter to make mono. Use the piano’s documented mono output or an input designed to combine stereo channels, as on the CM-30.
Follow the manuals’ power-up order, with speaker levels low; normally the sound source comes on before the powered speakers and goes off after them. Yamaha’s P-125a manual gives that sequence in its external-speaker instructions, for example. You only need an audio interface when another job, such as recording analogue outputs into a computer, calls for it.
Test at the volume you use after dinner
A loud demonstration can conceal idle hiss that becomes distracting between quiet phrases. Neither a wattage rating nor the listed frequency range answers that question. During a return period or a shop demonstration, use a short repeatable check:
- Play softly across the keyboard. Include sustained bass notes, a quiet middle-register melody and treble notes. Set a comfortable home level, then listen to the gaps.
- Compare against the piano’s own speakers at a similar loudness. A louder setting can make the new system seem immediately more impressive without resolving the original problem.
- Isolate unexpected noise. Turn levels down and power off before removing the audio leads, then listen to the powered speakers alone at the same normal control setting. If the noise disappears, investigate the connected source and cables. PreSonus’s noise troubleshooting guide explains this distinction. Never remove a protective earth connection to chase hum.
- Check ordinary movement. Lean towards the score, shift along the bench and reach the volume control. Confirm that the speakers and cables remain secure.
If the result only works at a volume that disturbs the household, a different speaker purchase may not solve the problem. A comfortable pair of piano headphones may fit that practice time better. Keep the packaging until you have tried your quietest passage from your usual seat.
