Twelve characteristic studies in two books, op. 70

Twelve characteristic studies by Ignaz Moscheles, each combining a technical purpose with a defined mood, an approach that influenced the whole later tradition of the musical etude. Moscheles spans an extraordinary stretch of musical history: he knew Beethoven personally and prepared the piano score of Fidelio under his supervision, and he later taught at the Leipzig Conservatory alongside Mendelssohn, where his pupils included the young Grieg.
