A saltarelle, the fast Italian dance whose name comes from the verb to jump, built on a relentless leaping rhythm.
It is one of the more approachable pieces in Alkan's catalogue, which is a relative judgment: most of his output makes demands that keep it out of reach of all but a small number of players, and this piece has consequently been programmed more often than works of greater ambition.

Charles-Valentin Alkan
1813–1888
Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life.
