Twelve studies to be played by the feet alone. Alkan was devoted to the pedalier, a piano fitted with an organ-style pedal keyboard, and wrote a substantial body of music for it that has almost no parallel anywhere. The instrument itself has essentially disappeared, so these pieces are now performed by organists when they are performed at all. They are the clearest illustration of how far Alkan's interests ran from the mainstream of his century.
