An early work by a composer who had entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of six and won its first prize for solfege at seven, an entrance record that still stands as remarkable even by prodigy standards.
The brilliant rondo was standard currency for a young virtuoso establishing himself, and this piece belongs to that phase, before Alkan's music turned toward the strangeness and severity that define his mature output.

Charles-Valentin Alkan
1813–1888
Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life.
