About the piece
A standalone prelude, composed in 1841 and dedicated to Princess Elisabeth Czernicheff, separate from the famous set of twenty four in Opus 28. It is one of Chopin's most harmonically adventurous short pieces, drifting through remote keys in a dreamlike way.
Near the close he writes out a delicate cadenza, a moment of free ornament before the music settles, giving the prelude an improvised, searching quality.
