About the piece
The final prelude, and the most violent. A wide, hammering left-hand figure churns beneath the right hand from the opening bar, and the piece drives forward with mounting fury for its whole length.
It closes the cycle with three low D's struck alone, like a door slammed shut. After twenty three pieces of shifting fragments, the ending is unambiguous, and it is one of the most decisive conclusions in the piano literature.
