About the piece
The fourteenth prelude sends both hands rushing in unison through a dark, harmonically unstable line, with no melody and accompaniment in the ordinary sense at all.
The texture strikingly anticipates the finale of Chopin's Second Sonata, written a year later, which uses the same device of bare unison writing to unsettling effect. It leads directly into the famous Raindrop prelude that follows.
