Published in 1741, these pieces put the harpsichord at the centre of a chamber ensemble rather than in a supporting continuo role, with violin or flute and viol as partners. The arrangement was genuinely novel for French music of the period, and Rameau noted in his preface that the pieces lose nothing when played on the harpsichord alone, which suggests he understood the market as clearly as the musical possibilities.
