About the piece
Rameau's Gavotte with six variations, from his Nouvelles suites de pieces de clavecin of around 1728, and among the most performed of all his keyboard works.
A stately gavotte theme is followed by variations of steadily increasing brilliance, in the French manner where each successive double adds ornament and motion. Rameau was nearly fifty before he wrote his first opera, having spent decades as an organist and as the most important music theorist of his century.

Jean-Philippe Rameau
1683–1764
Jean-Philippe Rameau was a French composer and music theorist of the late Baroque era. Regarded as one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the 18th century, he replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer of his time for the harpsichord, alongside François Couperin.
