About the piece

The last nocturnes Chopin published, appearing in 1846, three years before his death. They are the most harmonically searching of the whole series, moving through remote keys with a freedom that anticipates much later music. The first is famous for the passage where its melody returns swathed in a long chain of trills, an effect of extraordinary delicacy that ranks among the hardest things in the nocturnes to bring off convincingly.
