About the piece
Three nocturnes published in 1833 and dedicated to Ferdinand Hiller, a German composer and pianist who was part of Chopin's Paris circle alongside Liszt and Berlioz.
The set is notable for how sharply Chopin contrasts moods within single pieces. The first nocturne's calm opening is interrupted by music of real violence before the serenity returns, a dramatic instinct that separates his nocturnes from the gentler models he inherited.
