About the piece
The third and longest of the three nocturnes of Op. 9, published in 1832 and dedicated, like its companions, to the pianist Marie Pleyel.
Its outer sections are graceful and lightly playful, but the central passage turns unexpectedly turbulent, marked agitato, before the opening returns and the piece drifts away in a delicate closing flourish.
