About the piece
Five mazurkas published in 1832, among the first Chopin issued after settling in Paris, and the set that introduced much of Europe to the form. The first, in B♭ major, became instantly popular in the salons.
These early mazurkas stay closer to their village models than the later ones, with open drone fifths imitating folk bagpipes and stamping accents falling off the beat, though even here Chopin is already reshaping the dance into concert music.

Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the early Romantic period who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading composer of his era whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation".
