About the piece
Four mazurkas published posthumously in 1855 by Julian Fontana, Chopin's friend and copyist, who gathered unpublished manuscripts after the composer's death and issued them against Chopin's own stated wishes.
The set spans his entire career: the first three date from his youth in Poland, while the fourth, in F minor, is generally believed to be the last piece he composed, left unfinished and reconstructed from a difficult sketch.
