About the piece
The first of the mazurkas Chopin published, appearing in 1832 as the opening piece of his Op. 6. He would go on to write more mazurkas than works in any other form, returning to the dance throughout his life.
Even in this first published example the characteristic elements are present: the lean on the second or third beat rather than the first, the sharpened fourth degree borrowed from Polish folk scales, and a harmonic ambiguity that would have struck Parisian salon audiences as distinctly foreign.

Frédéric Chopin

Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the early Romantic period who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading composer of his era whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation".
