About the piece
Subtitled Grand rondeau de concert, this was composed in 1828, when Chopin was eighteen, for piano and orchestra. It takes the krakowiak, a fast syncopated dance from the region around Krakow, as its basis.
Written during his final years in Poland, before the exile that defined the rest of his life, it belongs with the other early concert works in which he was still writing for a soloist-plus-orchestra format he would later abandon entirely.
