About the piece
Composed in 1899, at a moment of expanding American involvement abroad, and intended as a gesture of friendship toward allied nations generally rather than any one country in particular. Sousa took the title from a line in a seventeenth century play.
It became one of his most frequently programmed marches and remains a staple of concert band repertoire worldwide.

John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for US military marches. He is known as "The March King". Among Sousa's best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever", "Semper Fidelis", "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", and "The Washington Post".
