About the piece
Composed in 1900 for the unveiling of a monument to the Marquis de Lafayette in Paris, during the Exposition Universelle. Sousa's band travelled to Europe for the occasion and performed at the ceremony.
The trip was part of the series of European tours that turned Sousa from a national into an international figure, and that established the American concert band as an export in its own right.

John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for US military marches. He is known as "The March King". Among Sousa's best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever", "Semper Fidelis", "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", and "The Washington Post".
