About the piece
Composed in 1841, the Fantaisie is one of Chopin's largest single-movement works and among his most freely constructed. It opens not with a theme but with a slow, dark march, an introduction that never returns, before the main body of the piece takes flight.
From there the music moves through a sequence of contrasting episodes, including a hushed chorale in the remote key of B major, and ends in triumph rather than tragedy, an unusual outcome for a Chopin work in a minor key.
