About the piece
Composed around 1833, when the bolero and all things Spanish were fashionable in Paris. Chopin had never been to Spain when he wrote it, and would only reach Majorca years later, in circumstances he found miserable.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the piece sounds at least as Polish as Spanish, its rhythms drifting toward the polonaise he knew far better. It is among the least often performed of his published works.
