About the piece
Composed between 1845 and 1846, in Chopin's final creative years, the Barcarolle takes the rocking rhythm of a Venetian gondolier's song and expands it into one of his largest and richest single movements.
Its melody constantly divides into two voices moving in thirds and sixths, and the piece builds to a climax of extraordinary warmth before receding. Ravel and Debussy both admired it enormously, and many pianists regard it as the summit of Chopin's late writing.
