About the piece

An early salon piece from before Raff's years with Liszt. He had begun as a schoolteacher in Switzerland, composing in isolation, and sent manuscripts to Mendelssohn, who recommended them to a publisher. That endorsement launched his career. He later walked much of the way to Liszt in order to attend a concert and introduce himself, an act of determination that secured him the Weimar position.
