About the piece
The finale of Venezia e Napoli, a supplement to the second book of Annees de pelerinage, based on Neapolitan popular melodies.
The tarantella takes its name from the legend that the dance was a cure for the bite of the tarantula, the victim compelled to move faster and faster until the poison was sweated out. Liszt's version builds accordingly, from a languid canzone through to a whirlwind close.
