About the piece
A spinning song, one of the most popular character types of the century, in which continuous rotating figuration imitates the turn of a spinning wheel.
Mendelssohn, Raff, Wagner and many others wrote versions, and the image had a specific resonance: spinning was the archetypal domestic female labour, and the spinning song carried associations of waiting, patience and long hours.
The composer
Henry Charles Litolff
1818–1891
Henry Charles Litolff was a French and British virtuoso pianist, composer of Romantic music, and music publisher born in London. A prolific composer, he is today known mainly for a single brief work – the scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No. 4 in D minor – and remembered as the founder of the Collection Litolff, a highly regarded publishing imprint of classical music scores.
