About the piece
An impromptu on the hymn Haydn wrote as the Austrian imperial anthem, composed during Clara Wieck's sensationally successful visit to Vienna in the winter of 1837 and 1838.
She was eighteen. The city gave her an ovation, the Emperor named her a Royal and Imperial Chamber Virtuosa, and the poet Grillparzer wrote a poem about her playing. Choosing the imperial hymn as a theme was both a graceful compliment to her hosts and a shrewd piece of programming.

Clara Schumann

Clara Josephine Schumann was a German virtuoso pianist, composer, and piano teacher. Regarded as one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era, she exerted her influence over the course of a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital by lessening the importance of purely virtuosic works. She also composed solo piano pieces, a piano concerto, chamber music, choral pieces, and songs.
