About the piece
The fifth variation, marked Adagio, is the emotional centre of the movement. Slowing the theme almost to a standstill, Mozart wraps it in the elaborate written-out ornamentation of an opera singer's cadenza.
It is the most expressively demanding of the six, requiring the player to shape a long decorated line without letting the underlying tune disappear beneath the decoration.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
