About the piece
The theme that opens Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331, composed around 1783. The sonata is unusual from its first bar: rather than beginning with a movement in sonata form as convention demanded, Mozart opens with a gentle theme and six variations.
The tune itself has the lilting compound rhythm of a siciliana, simple enough to be sung, and it is the seed from which the entire first movement grows. The same sonata ends with the celebrated Rondo alla Turca.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a Classical composer and musician. He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
