About the piece
A collection of songs and duets Rossini published in 1835, during the long retirement he began at thirty seven after Guillaume Tell, having written thirty nine operas and then essentially stopping.
He lived another four decades, composing only occasionally and mostly on a small scale. Liszt transcribed several of these pieces for solo piano, and the collection includes La danza, a tarantella that became one of the most popular Italian songs ever written.

Gioacchino Rossini
1792–1868
Gioachino Antonio Rossini was an Italian composer and conductor of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. While he gained most of his fame for his 39 operas, he also wrote many pieces of chamber music, piano, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.
