About the piece
A concert paraphrase on the great quartet from the third act of Verdi's Rigoletto, composed in 1859.
The quartet's fame rests on four characters singing entirely different sentiments simultaneously, and Liszt's achievement is to keep all four lines audible and distinct on a single keyboard while surrounding them with elaborate decoration. It is among the most successful of all his operatic transcriptions.
