About the piece
Composed in 1841 on themes from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and widely regarded as the greatest of all opera fantasies as well as one of the most difficult pieces in the repertoire.
Liszt does more than string tunes together: he opens with the Commendatore's music of judgment, moves through the seduction duet La ci darem la mano in a set of variations, and closes with the champagne aria, constructing a dramatic argument about the opera rather than a medley from it.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
