About the piece
One hundred short exercises for beginners, and for many students the first study book they ever open. Czerny wrote it to carry a player from the very first five-finger positions through to simple scales and broken chords.
Czerny's position in piano history is unique. He studied with Beethoven from the age of ten, premiered the Emperor Concerto, and later taught Liszt as a boy, placing him at the exact junction between the two figures who define the instrument's nineteenth century.

Carl Czerny
1791–1857
Carl Czerny was an Austrian composer, music educator, and pianist of Czech origin. His music spanned the late Classical and early Romantic eras. His vast musical production amounted to over a thousand works and his books of studies for the piano are still widely used in piano teaching. He was one of Ludwig van Beethoven's best-known pupils and would later become one of the main teachers of Franz Liszt.
