About the piece
One of the six Auenbrugger sonatas published in 1780 and among the most popular Haydn ever wrote. Its opening Allegro con brio is bright and immediately memorable, built on a decisive repeated-note figure.
The surprise is the middle movement, a short Largo e sostenuto in D minor of unexpected gravity, barely twenty bars long, which casts a shadow across the whole work before the cheerful closing rondo dispels it.

Joseph Haydn
1732–1809
Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
