About the piece
Published in 1780 as the first of six sonatas dedicated to Katharina and Marianna von Auenbrugger, two accomplished Viennese sisters whose playing Haydn praised warmly in a letter to his publisher.
This is by far the most frequently taught of all Haydn's sonatas, a fixture of examination syllabuses everywhere. Its transparent textures leave nowhere to hide, which is exactly what makes it valuable: clean fingerwork, crisp articulation and honest phrasing are the whole substance of the piece.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
