About the piece
Composed around 1776, one of the relatively few Haydn keyboard sonatas in a minor key, and among the most concentrated. Its outer movements are terse and hard-edged, with a driving presto finale.
The central minuet, in B major, offers a moment of courtly grace between them, a structural contrast Haydn used often to sharpen the impact of the surrounding music.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
