About the piece
The first of six sonatas published in 1774 with a dedication to Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, Haydn's employer. They were the first of his keyboard works to appear in print, and the dedication was a shrewd act of professional diplomacy.
Written in the polished, courtly manner expected of music offered to a prince, the sonata is more concerned with elegance than with the dramatic experiment Haydn was pursuing at the same time in his symphonies.
The composer
Joseph Haydn
1732–1809
Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio.
