About the piece
The third of MacDowell's four piano sonatas, subtitled Norse and dedicated to Edvard Grieg, whose music MacDowell admired and whose example as a national composer he consciously followed.
He prefaced the score with a verse evoking a Norse saga sung in a hall of warriors. The sonatas are the most ambitious things he wrote, and the fact that they are so rarely played says more about the neglect of American music from this period than about their quality.

Edward MacDowell
1860–1908
Edward Alexander MacDowell was an American composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches includes his most popular short piece, "To a Wild Rose". In 1904 he was one of the first seven Americans honored by membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
