About the piece
Composed in the mid 1760s, this sonata belongs to the period when Haydn, newly settled into the Esterhazy court, was beginning to write keyboard music of real expressive ambition.
Its slow movement in E♭ minor is the most striking part of the work, unusually dark and sustained for a keyboard sonata of its date, and points toward the more turbulent works of the following decade.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
