About the piece
Catalogued first in Hoboken's numbering of the keyboard sonatas, this is among the earliest of Haydn's surviving works in the form, probably dating from the 1750s when he was still in his twenties and living precariously in Vienna.
Written plainly for harpsichord, it shows the young composer working within the modest conventions of the day, long before he began reshaping them.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
