About the piece

Field's first published work, a set of sonatas issued in 1801 with a dedication to Muzio Clementi, to whom he had been apprenticed as a boy in London. The relationship was reportedly a hard one: Clementi worked the young Field long hours demonstrating pianos to customers in his shop. The sonatas predate the nocturnes and show Field working in the brilliant classical style of his teacher, before he found the intimate manner that would make his historical reputation.
