About the piece
Composed in Salzburg in early 1777, when Mozart was twenty one, and widely regarded as his first indisputably great work in any form. It breaks the rules from the outset: the soloist enters in the second bar, interrupting the orchestra rather than waiting through a long introduction.
It was long known as the Jeunehomme concerto, after a supposed French pianist of that name. In 2004 the dedicatee was finally identified as Victoire Jenamy, daughter of the dancer Jean-Georges Noverre, a family friend, and the mangled nickname explained.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
