About the piece
Mozart's last piano concerto, entered in his catalogue in January 1791, the year of his death, and first performed at a concert in a Viennese restaurant a few weeks later. It was his final appearance as a concerto soloist.
Its mood is restrained and translucent rather than brilliant, and the finale's main theme he reused within days in a song about longing for spring. Later listeners have often heard the whole work as a farewell, though there is no evidence Mozart intended anything of the kind.
