About the piece
One of only two Mozart piano concertos in a minor key, completed in 1786, and scored for the largest orchestra he ever used in the form, including both oboes and clarinets.
Its opening theme uses all twelve chromatic notes, an extraordinary gesture for its date. Beethoven, hearing it performed, is reported to have turned to a companion and said that we shall never be able to do anything like that, and its shadow falls clearly across his own C minor works.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
