About the piece
Completed in March 1785, only weeks after the very different D minor concerto, and entered in Mozart's own catalogue as he was performing almost constantly in Vienna at the height of his success.
Its Andante has become one of the most familiar pieces of classical music in the world after being used in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan, a nickname now so attached to the concerto that recordings are still marketed under it. Muted strings and a floating, seemingly endless melody make it one of the most serene things Mozart wrote.
