About the piece
Composed in 1784 for Barbara Ployer, one of Mozart's pupils, who gave the first performance at her father's house with the composer present.
The concerto is the source of one of the best known Mozart anecdotes. Shortly after finishing the finale he bought a pet starling, and noted in his expense book that the bird sang a version of the movement's theme, transcribing what it sang with the wry comment that it was beautiful. When the starling died three years later he held a funeral for it.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
