About the piece
Composed in 1784 during Mozart's busiest concert season, when he gave more than twenty performances in five weeks.
Writing to his father, he singled this concerto and its companion in D as ones that must make the performer sweat, and he clearly enjoyed the difficulty. It is also notable for treating the wind instruments as genuine partners in the argument rather than as accompaniment, a development that runs through all the Vienna concertos.
