About the piece
One of a set of three concertos composed in 1782, Mozart's first in Vienna, which he sold by subscription and advertised as playable either with full orchestra or with string quartet accompaniment, to widen the market.
In a much-quoted letter to his father he described them as sitting between too difficult and too easy: brilliant and pleasing to the ear, yet without falling into emptiness, with passages from which connoisseurs alone can derive satisfaction, while the less learned cannot fail to be pleased.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a Classical composer and musician. He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
