About the piece
Four movements for piano four hands, composed in 1889 and among Debussy's most immediately charming works: En bateau, Cortege, Menuet and Ballet.
Written for the domestic market rather than the concert hall, it predates the harmonic language he became famous for and shows him working in a graceful French idiom descended from Faure. It has been orchestrated many times and remains one of his most played pieces.
The composer
Claude Debussy
1862–1918
Achille Claude Debussy was a French composer, born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
