Weber's last opera, commissioned by Covent Garden and premiered in London in 1826. He learned English specifically for the project, taking over one hundred and fifty lessons, and travelled to London to conduct despite being seriously ill with tuberculosis. He died in London a few weeks after the premiere, at thirty nine. The overture has remained in the concert repertoire, though the opera itself is hampered by a libretto Weber himself disliked.
